Hey medical gurus.

I was eating some cereal at the in-laws, and noticed that I ingested some bugs along with the cereal.

The cereal was Honey Bunches of Oats. It had been sitting around awhile on top of the fridge. The in-laws don't eat too much cereal so I wasn't sure how long it had been up there.

I poured it out onto a bowl, and it seemed just fine. I then poured 2% milk, and started eating.

After 5 -6 bites, I look down, and I see all of these tiny black bugs floating around. I was disgusted, and tossed out the food immediately. I rinsed my mouth with water and mouth wash as well.

After doing some research, I think they are weevils, or Curculionidae .

Anyone think I should be concerned? I'm not too upset about having ingested bugs. But I don't want any parasites, or other unhealthy viruses/disease from this.

Thanks in advance for your medical opinion. :frown:

Your online MD here. Ingestion of these very common pests have been linked to development of dementia later in life. To neutralize the toxin, you need to wash those bugs down with Coca Cola......
Just kidding. Other than getting some extra protein, you are not going have any problem.

At least you know what to say when someone asks what's buggin you

If your in-laws had them in the cereal they are probably in a bunch of stuff that is flour based. We had them in our house and we had to toss a lot of food. They don't like bay leaves for some reason, we have bay leaves all over our cabinets.

I have a funny story about these lovely little creatures as well. My parents had all the in-laws over for dinner one evening and my mother prepared her famous sauerkraut that everyone always loves. I got to dinner a little late from work, so I had to make my own plate.

I took a scoop of the sauerkraut and heaped it on my plate along with everything else. As I was walking to the table I noticed "movement" on my plate. Knowing that my parents never throw anything out, and have had problems in the past with weevils, I am always cautious about her food. The bottle of carraway seeds that my mother added to sauerkraut was full of weevils. There was probably two thirds live weevils and one third carraway seeds in the jar. At this point I was not too hungry and passed on dinner.

After the meal I informed a few select people about the sauerkraut that they all loved was full of bugs, and they were not as excited about the meal any longer. Mom was mad I told a few people about the extra protein though.

Mental picture of a full bottle of live bugs in the spices. How the heck would they get in a glass bottle anyway?
