AC blowing hot air

Hi Guys,

I have a problem with my CL, which I believe has the same AC unit as my NSX. Today it started blowing hot air and I could smell something burning. I'm assuming it's dead, but I figured I'd ask anyway.

TIA!

Nobody eh???

I don't have any experience with this type of stuff, but my engineering ego tells me that the compressor (??) has seized and the belt is spinning around a pulley that isn't moving... hence the burn smell. What do you guys think? Please correct me!

C'mon, I know this will happen to my NSX in a couple of months so let's get it out of the way on my CL first.

If your compressor is siezed up you will hear a very loud sound from the belt under the hood when the A/C cycles on....and yes you will not get cold air.

look at the front of the A/C compressor clutch assy and have someone turn on the A/C then look to see if the intire assy starts to rotate....if it is siezed the whole thing will stop rotating and the belt will smoke and burn off in short order....JZ

Great, thanks for the info! So if it is not seized, then what do you think the source of the burning smell could be - it only happens when the AC is on.

THANKS!!

Not so much....R134A or R12 smell like a weak solvent, not burning....the blower motor can make burning smell as well as the blower fan speed resistor assy....good luck...JZ

Hey guys, here's an update and more questions...

The 15A condenser fuse blew, so I replaced it of course. There is still no cold air. The blower is working fine, it just blows hot air. The R134 is full. There is now a noticeable "scraping" noise from under the hood... seems to be coming from the compressor? It gets louder and quieter with engine revs/belt speed.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Yes. Sounds like it may be the A/C compressor clutch. Make a appointment with Mark Basch at Basch Accurate Service in Tempe. Get it diagnosed and repaired. 480 968 8010

The Freon leaking probably? That would be the first thing to check.
