Anyone had problems with their ABS unit on early NSX models?
Dealer said my 91 ABS unit is shot and costs $4K+ to replace.
Anyone knows a shop in San Fernando Valley that would
take out my old ABS and put in a used 95 ABS unit?
Help !

ABS

Be very, very wary of dealers wanting to replace your abs. My unit on a 1991 is also "not working" right now and from what, I'm not sure, but the dealer was no help whatsoever in providing me why it's not working. He actually hypothosized that I screwed it up by having it serviced privately and not using appropriate fluid (he did not recognize the blue fluid and said it was likely a silicon based fluid that'd ruin the seals so whole new system was needed . . . that was the basis of his entire diagnosis, blue fluid, you screwed it up! As it turned out it IS not the wrong fluid, but it still does not work).

Supposedly the dealer can hook up to the brain on the ABS and get a printout of error codes and give real reason for why it needs to be replaced.
If you find out why yours actually needs replacement, let me know, it could be illuminating for me.

Anyway, who needs traction control anyway! It just requires more discipline and skill from you to drive on the edge!;)

Thanks Mort for the response.
Dealer said that ABS pump bearings are breaking down and
contaminating the modulator/accumulator and high pressure
line. I am trying to get second opinion if it does really need to
be changed. My ABS light on the dash does NOT light up, does
yours?
You might be right, this might sharpen the driving skills!

ABSes always go out on the earlier cars. When that happen to mine, i am just going to laugh and go without it.

My light does not come on, but the ABS does not "work." I spent 2 days on track at NSXPO and never really missed it and believe me, I spent some time hard on the brakes!

Under most circumstances you don't need it, of course it is the extreme one when you wish it did. But given the mega cost to replace it, IF it goes bad, it hardly seems worth the expense.

I have no clue what is actually "wrong" with mine, it just does not function when it should (if I try to panic stop, the wheels can lock).

The last time my ABS didn't work it was because one of the 4 sensors were broke. In that case ABS light is on when you start the engine (normal), goes off after some seconds (normal) and goes on again after the first rolling meters (not normal). Sensors can be measured with special electronic meters.

At least in my '98 that means one bad sensor shuts off the whole 4 circle system.
