$$$ & ABS Modulator Brake Bleed Question...

Hello. I am having a shop install a new ABS Modulator Assembly for me this week. I was told that you need to replace and flush your regular brake system fluid when you remove and replace the ABS Modulator Assembly because the two are connected in some way. BUT I am wary of this because my ABS Reservoir is dry right now and my regular brake system is fine. The person told me that there is a line from the regular brake system that is connected to the ABS Brake system that would be affected by the install, and would necessitate a regular brake system fluid change and flush. Is this true? Sounds weird to me. Also, what is a good price for a shop to charge me to fill and flush my ABS Brake System Fluid once the Modulator unit has been replaced? What is a good price for replacing and flushing the regular brake fluid system? PLEASE help! Thanx! Shawn

Shawn,

The shop is telling you right. The NSX main brake system runs THROUGH the ABS system. If you mess with the ABS, you mess with the main system. Flushing the main system is simple, flushing the ABS is a little more complicated due to special tool requirements, but if this is an Acura dealer, then it is no big deal. Plus they have the automatic ABS tester box which pulses all four channels in sequence and negates the need to run from the inside of the car to the ABS unit 4 different times. I honestly do not know a price. Hopefully some of our other posters will be able to chime in on this one.

OK. Let me ask a potentially stupid (but related) question. If I were to replace the brake lines and calipers, do I need to bleed the ABS system, too...or is simply bleeding the lines at the calipers (like the traditional practice) sufficient?

The ABS system fluid is completely separate from the "regular" brake fluid. If you bleed your brakes, change pads, brake lines, etc., you do not need to worry about the ABS system.

Bleeding ABS is about the easiest thing to do on the NSX... you just need the Honda brake bleeder tool and a method to short out a couple of terminals in the front fusebox (to activate the ABS pump).
