we've had a couple of near-misses on this topic in the past, but i thought i'd mention i'm heading up to ocean cove for a 1-day up / back ab dive. checking the tide charts, it looks like the 15th has a .9 tide @ 10:43am - just right for my purposes. i'll dive on low tide, pick some abs and head home.

anybody interested in joining me is welcome to post here, pm or email me.

Two or three guys were just arrested yesterday, 29 May, for having 186 abalone, when the limit, I believe is 2 or 3. They've got about 5 felonies against them including some conspiracy stuff of getting abalone for the purpose of selling them commercially, which is a big no-no. If you go out stick to the limit rules and enjoy the day, which is what it is all about anyway.

Some people have no clue!

I haven't been diving in a loooong time, and never been ab diving. Whee are you heading to, the Mendicino coast?
i'll head up to ocean cove, ken, just a few miles north of ft ross. i'll likely leave my place ~3:30, drive up, schlep my gear down the hill and (hopefully) make my limit and drive back home. given the condition i'm in, i anticipate climbing back up the hill w/my gear and goodies will take me roughly the same amount of time as the drive home ;)

seriously, if things go reasonably well, i would expect to be home by 4pm and making dinner by 5:30.

i hope they throw the book at them.

the limit for reds (what we have on our north coast) is 3 and, i believe, 15 per season... courtesy of poachers. used to be 4 w/no season limit.

3's better than none, though, so no real complaint from me.

those poachers will go to prison - the state is very serious about poaching abs.

Great! So I'll be there by 5:30 at the latest. Can't wait to pound down some abs.

Do they taste anything like oysters?
no, nothing at all like oysters. and, surprisingly, nothing like chicken, either :)

i'm california born and raised (early years) in so cal, where my father brought home incredible amounts of abalone, scallops, fish, crab... you name it, he dove for and caught it. abalone only tasted like abalone... until i moved to florida and tasted conch (pronounced "conk"), which tasted almost exactly like ab.

abalone has an extremely mild flavor, so when preparing or eating it, you need to be careful not to overwhelm the flavor. there are many ways to prepare ab... here are just a few:

- fried (some use egg / light flour / italian bread crumbs and oil, cooking for 30secs on each side). usually drizzled with fresh lemon juice or dipped in cocktail sauce.

- sauteed in butter / olive oil w/garlic (or similar)

- raw (sashimi / sushi "awabi" or right out of the shell (trimmed, of course)

abalone is a real treat - try some if you ever get the chance.

Hal, is a sport fishing license all that I need?

In addition to the SFL you need Abalone Report Card. $19.70

Required for all persons taking abalone from ocean waters north of the center of the mouth of San Francisco Bay, including persons who are not required to have a sport fishing license, such as persons who are under 16 years of age, persons who are fishing from a public pier and persons who are fishing on free fishing days. Only one Abalone Report Card may be issued per person each license year.

whoa! thx for that... though given you have to tag abs, i'm not surprised you have to pay an additional fee for the means of reporting them.

I got my wetsuit out of storage and picked up my ab tags. I'll need a weight belt if you have an extra, and an ab iron too. Other than that, I'm good to go, as far as I know.

Want to talk about travel details?

another great morning spent ab diving on the north coast with our son, owen and chopsjazz / ken.

the water in the cove was glass-smooth, light cloud cover and low tide... and lots of abs in the bag when we departed 3 hrs after arriving.

i'll upload the video of ken i shot a month ago as soon as i locate it....
