A new clutch you say

Hey guys...my computer fried and I havent gotten around to hooking up my new computer (or putting together the desk for the new computer)...so its been a while since I have visited prime. Anyways, driving down my fav. boulevard at that great turn, I downshifted and watched as my tach jumped, my engine whined, and I just sat there at the same speed for a second. The tach went down a couple thousand rpm's and the power was delivered. Diagnosis (though I kinda knew it) according to my prodigious mech: I need a new clutch. My mech recommends the comptech type II clutch. But at $2250 for the part, I'm hard pressed to spend that kind of money. Though my mech is wise and very trusted. He says with this clutch I shouldnt need a new clutch for a VERY long time. Much longer than any other clutch I could buy for a cheaper amount. So....any suggestions, opinions, dramatic stories?

as always guys be safe and have fun

Kevin.

FYI a brand new Stock Clutch,Flywheel,P&TH-out bearing from Niello is $1074 if your a NSXCA Member and labor should be around $456 for the install.

It may last longer because with this clutch you may not want to drive the car as much as i seem to remember reading it was not so street freindly. But if you plan on using it on the track it would be a great choice.

Makes me wonder why the rebuilds are nears this price as well, some are more. Doesn't make sense to me.

Here are two possible reasons. It could be because (a) this is a heavily discounted price, or (b) you might be looking at a rebuild for a '97+, which is more expensive than for a '91-96.

I have the comptech powergrip II. I like it a lot. It is stiffer than the stock clutch and grips faster, but I don't think it's that bad. However, I wouldn't want to be stuck in stop and go traffic with it.

Yes I thought of both those reasons, but those aren't it.
Never mind me just complaining out loud.
I don't want to cause a fuss here.

I'm glad I got another stock clutch when mine went. It has advantages in cost, reliability, ease of engagement, and leg-friendliness. YCMV.

I agree Ken, if I did not get the deal that I got on my (reman) clutch I would probably of bought an OEM one as well. You also have Acura to stand behind it. They also usually come with a mileage warranty. Peace of mind for a few dollars more.

I've had the Comptech Powergrip II clutch for about a year. I really prefer the feel of it over the OEM one-- much stiffer and more sporty. It engages every bit as smoothly as the OEM clutch without chatter, but with more immediate bite in its engagement.

Contrary to what some have said, it is street friendly. I have no trouble driving around town in heavy traffic with it. Though I would not want to be stuck in stop/go traffic with it on a daily basis, occationally is fine.

I paid $1900 for the new clutch and included lightweight flywheel + $700 labor.

What I didn't like about the CT is after driving the NSX around for a while I would jump in my truck and just about push my foot through the floor. The CT feels like your driving an old chevy with a cable clutch IMO. Drivability was fine after getting used to the force.

Why is the clutch more for the 97+ It is a single plate. How much is it? I have the 6 speed.
Sounds like you better get that web site up and running soon. Call me about the clutch if you need one.

I have the Comptech clutch also. I like the way it "bites" and the "muscle car" pedal feel. Being caught in traffic is a bad thing, but well worth the pain!!! BTW I'm starting to notice that my left leg is getting bigger than my right

Kevin,

You have a lot of choices in regard to a clutch. I recall you have a 1991 correct? So you have ACT, Centerforce, OEM, Exedy and the list is more. It is very hard to tell you in words about the CT PGII pedal feel. Some like it, some think it is too stiff.

I would definately drive one FIRST, before committing to the most expensive choice in a clutch.

I am not really agreeing with the whole "last longer" theory at all. I have no reason to think that the CT will last longer then say the OEM or any other. It's like trying to rate brake pads, impossible.

I really recommend you do a little more homework before you leap.

The increased pedal effort is described very well in this post by all that have driven it. I have, and stop and go traffic would not be fun after the first few miles, JMO.

nsxparts.com,

The +97 clutch is high priced since you cannot recondition the dual mass flywheel and it is about a $2000 item list

I have always heard that any of the aftermarket clutches will not last as long as the OEM, probably because of the way they are driven?

I think for most people the OEM is more than adequate. I tracked my '95 for over a year (13 events) on a stock clutch and was very happy with it. My '92 has an ACT rebuilt clutch from Dali so I could get a lighter flywheel. Otherwise, it would have been an OEM also.

Wow,

Thanx for all the input guys. Actually my mech. has an NSX in his shop with the Comp.II setup as well as the 6 spd conversion. I'll try and take that for a ride.

Barry, where did you buy your CT clutch? I was told by a CT rep. at my local dealership that CT doesnt give ANY breaks in terms of price for their products.

I have been qouted at appx.$1500 for a stock NSX clutch. If you guys know where I can get the OEM clutch cheaper let me know. I no longer drive my NSX daily (weekends) so I have some life to the clutch to allow me to look over my options. However, Its frustrating to feel the clutch slip. Its like putting Carl Lewis to run barefoot on a track smoothed over by ice!! Sort of takes the enjoyment out of the NSX.

Try Science of Speed, or Fournier's Auto (which can also do the install for you).

As Steve notes above, it's $1074 from Niello Acura with your discount as a member of the NSX Club.

(Don't forget that some of the Florida dealers give discounts on parts and service to club members.)

Amazingly enough, I bought the CT II clutch at the Acura dealer (Lynwood Acura to be precise... just a few miles North of Seattle).

First off they give a 15% or so discount to NSX club members just for asking. Then they lied about having ordered my clutch, when they actually haden't. This caused my car to sit a the dealer for nearly a week. When I complained and asked them to "make it right", they came down even farther on the clutch. But not before first checking on the computer to see how low they could go. So I would assume they didn't loose any money even at $1900. (Regardless of what Comptech says, there must be a dealer markup of some amount.)

I was pretty nervious having my car at the dealer for an entire week, but amazingly they only put a couple miles on my car which I think is reasonable for testing a new clutch.

So, if someone lies about being a member of the NSX Club to get a discount, and the dealer then lies in return when ordering the discounted part, would you consider that fair and square?

Also don't forget to ask if the clutch you are buying comes with the pilot and throwout bearing, some don't. This is about $125 extra. Niello's price includes these and no core fee to worry about. If installed by an Acura dealer it more than likely will come with a warranty.

Hey guys,

Sorry to bring this topic back up again. Remember I said my mech at http://www.mcamotorsports.com/ has an NSX with the comptech PGII clutch for me to test drive. Well, alot of work is being done to the engine; hence, it is not drivable right now. SOOOOO!! Um...is there anyone in the Miami area with this or any other after market (other than ACT) clutch I can test drive...pleeeeeeez.

I have reviewed and over reviewed the various clutches out there. I can offord to go OEM right now (tempted to do so at this point); however, I've heard so much positive feedback on the CTPGII I'm willing to wait a lil longer. Forgive my impatience again, but what dealer will give a discount for the CT clutch?????

BTW I like the stiffer pedal feel...infact...I can swear that my clutch used to be much stiffer than any other NSX (with stock clutch) that I drove. I guess that stiffness gradually went away as the clutch wore (does that make sense?). I miss that. I like the lil work out I get also (hey, I ran track-400meter dash- through high school and college). The pedal pressure is no big deal for me. The price however is :(
