Last year I had the dealer install all new 93 A/C components in my 91-- new compressor, clutch, drier, condenser, evaporator, expansion valve, and all new lines. Absurdly expensive! I even had to order an A/C clutch from Japan using a proxy buying service since Acura in the US says the part is discontinued. It turns out Honda still makes the clutches for Japanese customers on a made-to-order basis.
However recently an intermittent sound has developed in the engine bay near the compressor. The sound is only present when the A/C clutch is not engaged. It sounds like a tin can whirring noise that seems to match the rpm of the drive belt. As soon as the A/C clutch engages and the compressor comes on, the noise is gone. But when the clutch disengages the sound immediately returns.
If I look at the pulley where the compressor is it looks like the outer part is wobbling slightly as it turns. I'm wondering if this could be due to the belt alignment being slightly off?
