A/C compressor question...

I'm helping a local NSX'r with his car. The A/C is not working. BrianK rebuilt the control unit, the condenser fans are both operating and it appears that the system is charged. The A/C clutch is not engaging on the compressor.

Is there a fuse I can check that controls this....and (flame suit on) any opinions on the non OEM compressors available on eBay if that is the problem?

He is running this car on a budget - which is why I'm helping him fix it.

The most common reason for compressor to not engage is because the system is low or out of freon. There needs to be a minium freon pressure to make the pressure switch. This is to protect the compressor from running dry which will distroy it.

go and buy the Upgrade from r-12 to r-134a in the kit, it comes with the new fittings, and 3 cans of recharge cans,, use 2.5 cans in the system,, will blow cold again!!! if it only blows cold on one side of the car you dont have enough refrid in it

I passed the info on - he's going to recharge and see if thats it. I did check the site glass and it looked full, but was not circulating.

No flame suit necessary. :) I had a similar issue earlier this year. The problem may just be a burned out clutch. You should have your mechanic test the clutch energize using a 12v power source. It might save you a lot of $. I wish I had known at the time...by the time pbassjo gave me this advice, the stealership already had my NSX A/C apart and I walked out with a $2000+ bill.

also if you wanna use an 1992-1995 Legend compressor it will work,, same but cheaper price,,, you will need to take the brackets off the nsx and put them on the legend compressor but it will work just different part numbers,, LOL

Awesome!!

I'll hit up the guys on the Legend site if that turns out to be the issue.

The compressor you need is a Nippondenso 10PA15C, which you can get pretty much anywhere including Ebay (I did and it works great). Some (including Mark Basch) suggest that a slightly larger capacity compressor (i.e., the 10PA17C) is better for the R134 refrigerant, but my 15C blows ice cubes.

Where you need to be careful is the clutch/pulley. Virtually all 10PA15C compressors sold on Ebay or other rebuild sites (even the ones that say NSX) are actually Integra units. While the Integra shared the same compressor as the NSX, it used a smaller pulley. For example, even though I asked the vendor to verify that my new compressor used the larger NSX pulley, it shipped with the smaller Integra one. If this happens, you can have your mechanic swap the new clutch into your old NSX pulley. It shouldn't be hard.

That was exactly the problem. Thanks, Brian.
