I guess that's it. In Hong Kong, there is no vanity plate. You can't simply pay the DMV to have a plate of your own. You will be assigned with a regular number, just like the US.

However, if you want something different, you will have to attend an auction. Some plates will be cheaper and some will be more expensive, depends on the combination.

I guess this plate costed so much because it contains numbers only. 99.9% of other plates contains a combination of letters (2) and numbers (4). It's a supply/demand thing...

aside from that being the most rediculous thing i've ever heard....

i guess you actually can have too much money. you would think you could spend a million a little better than that. if not on yourself, a charity or something. you would think people would steal plates all the time and sell them to collectors or something. whats to stop someone from stealing the plate of his car? i guess he'll probably just lock it up somewhere or put it in his trophy case? i dont understand some people

Am I missing something here, but why it is so cool to have a number 12 on your license plate?

Nothing will stop someone from stealing the physical plate, but it will be worthless. They are bidding on the "right" to use the number "12" plate. Without legal document, the plate company won't make you new plate with that said number.

It's purely a symbol of social status and the meaning of that plate. There are less than 100 plates with numbers only. That means you must be doing well enough to bid on them. On the other hand, some people have the belief the certain numbers are lucky to them. However, no one will ever want a number plate ending with "4" since it sound like death in Cantonese.

Cultural difference...

BTW, the plate will be assigned to the individual and they can register whatever car they want. If they sell that car, they can register the plate to another vehicle.

ah i see. kind of like a copyright in a way. well i guess that makes a little more sense.....but i still think its crazyness.

but it's not like you'd put a plate like that on a geo. chances are you'd have something high end, but i guess that isnt enough to show off your status. seems like a way to bring unwanted attention to yourself, but i guess that could be different in his culture.

I wonder what car will be wearing this "12" plate.

It better not be anything less than an Enzo!

Not true. There are way more than 100 numbers only plates running in HK. I personally know at least 2 people who have numbers only plates. I see them all the time in HK. They are rare but not that rare.
