6speed/4.55R&P, what gear to dyno?

I'm looking to do some dyno pulls in the near future and am seeking advice on which gear would be the best to use. I understand a 1:1 ratio is the goal so with a 6speed tranny and 4.55 ring and pinion which gear do I use? Thanks!

I'm not sure if I understand the question "but" when ever we have done dyno testing we would roll the throttle to just below redline and then advance thru 1-2-3-4-5 and in your case 6.The goal is to track HP at "all" speeds w/ all or many variables concidered to see where the peaks (and valleys) are for torque also. This information is crucial for drag racing.

Thanks for the feedback guys. So I take it that 5th gear will be the closest to a 1:1 ratio when running my combo. If you don't mind, could you provide details to how you made that determination. Thanks again,
Scott

Scott,

You might try pulls in both 4th and 5th gear. I was surprised during our free dyno time at the Buckeye Fly-In when we tested the same car back-to-back in both 3rd and 4th gear for the standard 5-speed with very little difference in results. I thought the rotating inertia in the higher gear would hurt the results, but because it accelerates slower in the higher gear, the results were the same.

The 1-1 gearing theory is kind of a joke, because it ignores the ring and pinion gearing. The dyno will correct the torque for any gear ratios by measuring the speed of the drum versus the RPM of the engine and correct all results to RWHP, but crank torque (but with driveline friction).

By the way, Leigh and I are moving to New Tampa next month.

Bob,
Your input is greatly appreciated and I will do pulls in a couple of different gears, (4&5), to see how the results compare.

It will be great having you and Leigh in the area! Please let me know if I can be of any help while you're settling in...pointing you to a nice restaurant or introducing you to the service personnel at the local dealership. We are fortunate to have great weather year round which allows the Florida Chapter to stay very active 12 months each year. Take care,
Scott
