Hi Guys,

I need a new transmission. I am thinking about converting to a 6-speed. I have a 92 NSX and a new RPS clutch coming.

Could someone please shed some light on how the new 6-speed can be installed?
Do I need any other parts other than the electronic lock-out pin from Comptech USA?
Is it a simple swap of the transmissions that no tuning is needed after install?

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You will need new clutch most likely unless you have a comptech PG1/2.

If you are retaining/using a 5-speed twin-disk clutch, you will need to get the NSX-R main shaft. Otherwise, you will need to get a single-disk clutch which is what the 6-speeds come with from the factory.

NSX-R Main Shaft.

I didn't know about that. Thanks for the post. That is excellent.

If you are getting an RPS clutch, it is fine with the 6 speed. The 6 speed is compatible with the 3.0 engine, just bolt it in. Add the reverse lock out, and you are good to go.

As larry said it will bolt right up to the 3.0. I just did mind about 7 months ago and man what a difference.

Just get the whole kit from comtech, It will include the 6-speed emblem from HONDA, the new access plate that you will not use from your 5-speed, and the lock-out box which is plug and play. I have one from SOS but it needs to be hard wired and I just couldn't and didn't have the time to figure it out. If you want, Chris gave me a good deal on it. It's yours for what I paid. PAY IT FORWARD right.

The only difference will be to use REDLINE MT-90. The tranny will like that much better than motor oil or HONDA MTL. Larry could comment on this. I was told not use anything else.
Enjoy

Thank you guys for your feedbacks. They really helped.

I am getting a used 6-speed tranny that came out of a 97 front-end accident NSX. The cost of the 5-speed rebuilt along with short gears and snap-ring issue is $3k? I rather get an used 6-speed tranny instead. I might add a CTSC in the future and I think 6-speed might work better with it.

Chudson: the kit you have mentioned from Comptech cost around $600 right?

I would like to get a used 6-speed as well. I would sell my short gears and comptech 455 5-speed for it or trade it.

I paid under that but not too far. You can find the lock box cheaper. But then you'l have to buy the 6-speed emblem and access plate.

I have to say I have had "0" issues with Honda MTF. Obviously the base line is a good trans with little wear. This is both with used and new transmissions. It is all I use. I think the GM syncromesh will aid shifting in a worn trans, since it increases the friction. I do not see a problem with the GM stuff based on results here, just have not had a situation where I thought it was warranted.

This has been my experience.

where is a good place to look for he 6 speed trannys? and you can find the lockout kit from comptech?

I browse Ebay for NSX stuff all the time. It so happened that when I decided to buy a used 6-speed, there was one tranny with less than 20,000 mile on Ebay. The seller said the transmission came out of a front-end accident 97 NSX. Ebay item #8041178108.

I will be calling Clint at Nopi to get a quote on the conversion kit.

Uh, no you won't. He hasn't been there since the end of last year.
Brian is our contact now.

Yes, Brian is the man now. My experience working with Brian has been wonderful. I got a set of the Comptech 6-speed conversion from him yesterday and the price was simply excellent.

i was contemplating this swap as well...do all the sensors for the 5 speed work on the 6 speed?

Yes, all the sensors work on the six-speed. The only thing you need to get is the lockout box from Comptech. It's is used to prevent accidental shifting into reverse. Call Brain at Nopi, he'll hook you up with a very decent price. My friend did the install for me. He took out the tranny, install the 6-speed tranny, and then put all the connectors together (Comptech lockout box).

I love the 6-speed! You can tell the car is faster. I feel there's more power in every gear except first and the sixth. You won't regret getting the 6-speed. My friend has short gear, but it's not really the same as the 6-speed tranny.

Drop me an email.

Laworldauto is the Ebay member ID number. Check out their Ebay store. You might find someone that you like. You can always call Joe at Laworldauto to see if he's got some parts that you can use.

If you need to repair your tranny, it will cost about $2,625 (the price went up about $200 this month) to have it rebuilt by SOS. It will be another $300 to ship it round trip. I paid only a few hundred dollars more and got a 6-speed w/less than 20k miles on it. That few hundred dollars worth every penny. I don't think i can ever go back to drive a five-speed NSX.
