Hi Everybody,
Has anybody here put a 6 spd in the 91-96? If so, were there any issues when installing it? How do you like the performance? How much did it cost you total?

Thanks for the input!

I haven't done it...but I know a couple people who have. I remember a final price of around $10,000. This includes the new tranny and case, reverse lock-out "stuff", labor, and new clutch as well (I think...).

I'm sure someone else will chime in on this one...or you can just call Acura of Brookfield and speak with John Vasos for more information.

Ok, but if you have a severe snap ring failure and you need a new clutch the "final price" for the upgrade is not THAT high!

Let's see... snap ring failure, $2K to fix... clutch replacement, about the same... subtracting from $10K... it's still a lot of money.

a closer, and IMO more cost-effective "fix" would be to get the close-ratio JDM gearset (aka "short gears"), and possibly the JDM Type-R 4.23 R&P.

Makes the car more "fun to drive" on the street (see more lower-gear VTEC), and IMO improves overall shiftpoints at some tracks (may hurt it at others). IMO more "fun value" than headers and comparable to an exhaust.

YMMV

nsxstasy,
yes but 6k$ is 40% less than 10k$. A DEAL to me!

Or even better: 10k$ is 66% more than 6k$!

Isn't math marvelous?

10 grand! You guys have been smoking some serious dope

We offer the 6-spd for $4650. You can add either the Comptech Powergrip 2 clutch/flywheel set or factory clutch/flywheel. The lock-out issue can be addressed with a couple different solutions.

Cheers,

Let's see... $4650... plus a clutch is another grand... plus shipping... and labor... and you're looking at, if not ten large, pretty close to eight, no?

Comptech sells a 6-spd conversion kit for $675.The labor involved to install a 6-speed is pretty much the same as to install a 5-speed. The stock 5-speeds came with a dual clutch system the six speeds with a single clutch system and also utilizes a heavier flywheel. You'll probably want to replace the clutch, flywheel, throwout bearing, pilot bearing and gear oil.Maybe need a new master or slave cylinder as well... Either way this alone will easily cost you $2500. Depending on what you get a 6-speed for, I can easily estimate an $9000 tab. If are in need of a new tranny anyways, then I would look into a 6-speed. But if your looking to just add a little more nsxcitment then I would put it towards a twin turbo kit.

Replacing the clutch set is required, as the shaft is shorter on the 6-spd.

Here's the breakdown with a 6-spd to the best of my knowledge:

* 6-speed tranny set / $4650
* OE clutch set / $2100
- or -
* Comptech Powergrip 2 / $2100*

You may be able to use the earlier flywheel with different length bolts, I can't remember if the bolt pattern is different.

Looks like about $7000 to me for NEW parts. Way off ten grand

If anyone is serious, I'd be happy to compile a complete quote.

* does not reflect ScienceofSpeed discount on Comptech parts, please inquire.

Cheers,

Yes that is correct you can use the earlier flywheel, but you will pay at least someting to machine the flywheel surface and to buy the shorter bolts. In addition you'll need a newer style throw-out bearing fork and I believe slave cylinder as well. Unless he plans to install all this on his own, there will be about 8 hours of labor to pay for as well...whatever that comes out to. I've also considered the shipping and the CA 8% sales tax we have to deal with, so that can be thrown out if you don't live here.

Do you think the Comptech conversion kit is worth purchasing? What does this kit exactly consist of? If not, okay, I agree with you, about $7000...but that's just for parts.

How did you get a couple thousand??

8 x $80 = $640.00

I think Basch Acura charges 6 hours for a tranny swap where they do not need to crack the case. I think I know what it is! You guys are used to over paying for NSX products & services, so you add the NSX multiplication factor when discussing prices, hehe.

The Comptech conversion kit includes an electronic device that actuates the reverse lock out solenoid to prevent mis shifts. You can always create one yourself using a variety of methods as discussed in previous threads (search). It also includes a nice new 6-spd plaque so you can brag to your friends
