Hello folks,

just wanted to get your expertise on this. When i drive my NSX i find it hard to shift into 2nd gear (car is properly warmed up). this doesnt occur if i am going from 1st to 2nd immediately. but lets say i am cruising in traffic and i go from 1st gear and stay in neutral and let the tachometer get to about 1 RPM. when i shift into 2nd gear, it just doesnt happen. i either have to go back into 1st again, step on clutch several times to get into 2nd gear, or 3rd...any ideas?

also, before i bought the car, the clutch was replaced (<2,000 miles, sometime in June 2002) by an acura dealer in virginia. will my local so cal acura dealer warranty the labor and parts if i had them check it out and there was something actually wrong with it??

thanks in adance for everyones help,
khue

If it's only one gear, it's probably not your clutch. Synchro is probably most likely.

Here is a simple test: match the revs when you shift into 2nd. If it goes in smoothly when you match revs, it's probably a synchro problem.

The good news: synchros are cheap

The bad news: the labor to replace them is quite expensive

It always engages and goes smoothly when i match the revs. i thought that if it was a synchro, there would be some grinding noise??? there is absolutely no grinding noise. i called several acura dealers and i get conflicting answers, such as clutch, gear box, clutch master cylinder...

this doesnt bother me much, it is just an inconvenience in traffic sometimes, will it gradually get worse or should i just let it be since i dont drive my car that aggressively and usually match my revs.

Drive the car aggresively....like it was built for = Problem fixed!

looks like you will be rev matching until you need a new tranny or opt for short gears or r&p. until then rev match and after for that matter.its the way you should drive it anyway.and if you start rev matching all the time.could be a long time till you need to open her up

Typically you do get grinding with bad synchros but it depends on what is wrong and how worn it is. There are very few other things which would affect only one gear. If it were clutch-related you would probably have the same problem at least to some degree in other gears. It's certainly worth checking your clutch fluid, transmission fluid and looking for any leaks, etc. In fact if you change your transmission fluid it may even help reduce the symptoms somewhat (but it will not fix the root of the problem).

Yes it will get progressively worse. How fast that happens depends how much you put wear on it. If you keep rev-matching all your shifts it will get worse slowly.

It doesn't affect anything else directly. If you do not rev match and your synchros are bad and you keep forcing it into gear it can cause other problems but if you rev-match well it'll be OK.
