$2300 for shipping/pickup?

He's probably doing that to avoid the Ebay final value fees.

You can report this if you want to Ebay because they frown on this tactic.
If it's legit, then heck, it's smart of the seller to avoid the final value fee.

Q: I suggest you read eBay's rules about fee avoidance. (Jun-18-06)
A: Fixed.

That was me. Unfortunately, he did not fix anything. Always check the shipping cost before you bid. You can file fee avoidance with eBay, but it is doubtful you can void the transaction completely. Therefore you will receive negative feedback and possibly a non-payment strike.

Is $1600 a bad deal for Type R wheels?

It does piss me off, however, the whole fee avoidance thing that sellers pull. Just raises the fees yet again for the honest folks.

Response from ePay after report filed:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thank you for taking the time to report this listing for violation of
our Excessive Shipping Charges policy.
As you may know, eBay committed to enforcing this policy more
aggressively starting June 19. It will take some time before this
initiative is fully up and running  in the short term, we've begun
enforcing the most obvious and egregious violations of our Excessive
Shipping Charges policy. Over time, our enforcement will expand to
include more violations. Therefore, it's possible we won't immediately
take action on the report you've submitted  rest assured, however, that
we plan to stop this practice on eBay, and that your reporting this
violation is an important step toward achieving that goal.
We very much appreciate your help in identifying sellers who you believe
are charging excessively for shipping and would ask that you continue to
report to us. We can only clean up this problem by working together.
Thanks again for taking the time to report this listing to us.
Regards,
The eBay Community Watch Team
In addition, you can simply pull your bid and not worry about unreputable sellers that pull this type of crap - OR - leave your $1.00 bid and refuse to pay. Wait for feedback type and then give it to him. lol
I met him, I stop by his area to check out some of the stuff he's got on Prime for sell... He is good guy, but a little studburn with his pricing. Unfortunately, NA1 stuff are just not that hard to get, including NA1 Type R stuff.
Some of the stuff is just way too pricey, but again, some stuff are bargin.
The way I look at it...shipping cost is separate from the actual cost of the item. If he allows pick up, shipping cost shouldn't apply. I could have sworn I didn't see shipping cost to be $1600 bucks when I placed the bid.
A shit load of his listings are that way with extreme shipping cost.
my pick cost fee is $1600 regardless.....
That's pretty weak. There is no statement of a $1600 fee, except for:
"PICKUP.
Pick up is allowed California bidders will be responsiable for sale tax and handling.charge."
A "legitimate" seller would disclose that a "handling.charge" is $1600 for local pickup. It is very obvious the seller is trying to skirt eBay listing fees.
That's because that information is not listed. He does list "US $2,300.00 Local Delivery/Pickup United States only", which is the same price for "UPS Ground United States only", so he's not even being consistent with his charges.
So what happened in the end with this? The seller ended the auction early.
I put a bid of $1 to start and the auction ended 8 hours early taken advantage of my only bid. I got the invoice w/ $1600 bucks shortly after. I declined to pay in which he reported to ebay of my intention. I replied back to ebay of the story. A short while later, I got this message in the email:
The seller, racer986jec tells us you have mutually agreed not to complete the transaction (e.g. because you returned or are returning the item for a refund or because there was a misunderstanding) and has requested a credit for their eBay fees.
I can only suspect that with ePay cracking down on dopes like this that the seller will get more than just his listing fees returned. JMO
Definitely a scam, but many Ebay sellers are starting to do this practice. Especially, for those that actually pay sales taxes. The selling price is taxable but not the shipping charges.
ePay should report those accounts to the Federal authorities for tax evasion. lol
This occured to me as well. But there is a catch-- shipping fees are free from sales tax only to the extent of the cost. Any markup on the actual shipping costs are taxable.
I have zero problems with this practice from a buyers standpoint. This methodology isn't designed to screw the buyer, it's designed to screw Ebay. Ebay fees are expensive, if the seller wants to use this practice to try and skirt them, that's their call and it may come back to haunt them. It's certainly not illegal (look at all the infomercials on TV selling crap for a few bucks then charging $40 for S&H).
For you, as a buyer, you need to look at the product cost and the shipping cost and decide if the item is worth the TOTAL cost before bidding. What this seller does is VERY common on ebay, and anyone who purchases anything on ebay should know to look for it (and also realize that the seller is not trying to hose the buyer in most casts).
My wife as a buyer always tells her friends "look at this great lot of baby clothes I got for $5!!!!", her friends all want to flock to ebay. She somehow always seems to forget to mention that shipping was another $50.
The insurance industry is doing a similar arrangement to maximize thier profit by charging a lower premium and add on a subscription fee. The premium you pay is subject to taxes and commission. The subscription fee is not.
This is a game that we all play. To pay taxes on products you purchase with your taxed income after you take out from the bank after they taxed the interest on your taxed principle and taxed products, taxed services and taxed this and taxed that. Taxes everywhere. What a legal robbery.
