Here is my story…

I have wanted an NSX since I was a senior in High School (Fall 1990). You can read more about my quest for the NSX here...

I knew that I wanted Sebring Silver, and I decided on a 91, since that’s what i fell in love with 20+ years ago. The purist’s car, the driver’s car.

March / April of 2012, searching Autotrader, Cars.com, and of course here on Prime. And on Prime, going WAY back in the old pages of the cars for sale section, I found a few cars that caught my interest. One in particular was in NJ. VIN JH4NA1158MT001001

This worked out very well for me since I’m on the East Coast as well (in Morgantown, WV). I spoke with the owner, Joel. His car was not selling as listed, so he sent it to Larry B to have a good bit of work done on it. We arranged for me to fly into Philly and buy the car after the work was completed.

Joel had extensive work done to the car, I think totals were like $5800.

I flew from Pitt to Philly, on the way, I got to talking with the guy sitting beside me. I told him I was buying the car I have wanted for almost 22 years. He was Amazed that someone could want something for So long, be patient enough, and finally get what he wanted. The guy congratulated me and soon we were landing in Philly... Joel met me at the airport. As he was pulling around to the Arrivals area, I as in Awe !!! Very clean, Sebring Silver NSX, I want to say it had springs, so it was Low. It looked AWESOME ! And I was happy knowing that I would own this car very soon. Joel picked me up, again this car was LOW... I got into the passenger seat and we left the airport. We headed away from the airport and I commented about how nice the car was, etc. Joel said “I’ve got some bad news for you”. He said that on the drive down from Princeton to Philly, a (check engine light) CEL went on. He said it could be something as small as an O2 sensor, but he couldn’t say for sure. I had no interest in driving the car home without knowing what was going on. Joel had just dumped a bunch of cash into his car to sell, and now we are stuck. He was able to get Larry B on the phone, who was at a dinner. Larry said it could be something as simple as an O2 sensor. He said he rebuilt that engine and that it Would be safe to drive. He said, however, that he has a bunch of cars in que, and if i wanted him to fix this, it would be weeks before he could get to it. I REALLY wanted this car, and Joel REALLY wanted to sell it... I walked. I was dropped off at the Philly airport and bought a ticket home. My wife was proud of me and my decision Not to buy this car considering the unknowns behind the CEL. A happy wife is a happy life =) And remember when You are buying, this car is Not a 1 of 1. There are others out there !

So you bought the car you've wanted for 22 years and are selling it just a couple months later?

I bought the car May 2012, and started writing this post in May 2014. Happily married (and with the blessing of my wife I bought my dream car and enjoyed it for 2 years) and with 1 little one I drove this car almost 14k miles in two years. We were just blessed with our 2nd little girl. Older sister will start preschool in the fall, and I don't see the car getting much use for the next 5 years or so. Also, I have permission to buy and build another in the future. I just never got around to documenting my "New NSX owner experience", I was too busy enjoying the car to type.

you did a good job posting. congrats and welcome to the club.

Thank you Shawn. And thanks for saving so many NSXs

wow so your whole 2 years of ownership has been encapsulated in one post......this has to be the winner of the cliff note award....ps I think sebring is the best color.

I'm sure you are aware of this but in the next 5 years it will only get increasingly difficult and more expensive to find your perfect NSX again, if what you have is what you'll be chasing 5 years from now you may find yourself regretting the sale in the future. But if you'll be looking for a different color or engine size or year, etc in 5 years then by all means, selling now and buying in the future makes perfect sense.

Reviewed your for sale post and she's definitely a well taken care of beauty. I know firsthand the seller's remorse we experience when we let these cars go. Your intentions are good but she'll definitely be missed. Congrats in advance to whoever picks her up. Seems like a rare pristine find.

What ultimately turned out to be wrong with this car?
