2008 Cannonball - One Lap of America - 10 tracks in 7 days

I entered in the Cannonball this year in a unmodified M3 Vert, we got 5th in class and 59th overall out of 90 fully prepped race cars, which is amazing considering our only mod is wheels and tires. Tomorrow is the last day at the dry skid pad but were much secure that thats were we are finishing.

The Nissan GTR looks like its going to finish around 8th overall which was amazing for a stock car.

One Lap of America is a True Ultimate Street Car Challenge across 9000 miles of road way, testing the endurance of the cars and drivers between 10 competitive tracks, Note: We do not race on the street!

The most difficult part of this race series is enduring the the 5-10 hours of driving immediately after completing each race track. The schedule is so tight its hard to arrive by 4am at the next city and be up by 8am at the race track. Its hard on the drivers and even harder on the cars, as most race cars cannot endure 9000 miles of street driving along with the abuse of 10 consecutive race track days in only 7 days.

Props to you.That schedual is survivable only if you are young or a mutant:wink: Nice work using a convertable,no roof to contain your stuff,means you can pile all manner of crap to each venue.

Actually most of the one lappers have entered every year for 10+ years, some 20+ years and they are in their 40's and 50's some even 60's including Tony Swan the editor of car and driver has been in it since the 80's. And Brock Yates as well as Robert Dubler. Their is at least 30 or more people in there 60's that still race the event. Lots of big names in the automotive race car building industry enter every year.

All mutants:wink: It is a test of human endurance and mechanical reliability more than a test of driver skill,but for the joy of shear competition would I consider trying it.Then I think about the pain of those drives to the venues and My sanity steps in.How did your bimmer hold up?

There is serious driver skill at the One lap, if your looking at track times your not considering that we are running unknown tracks, there are no practice runs and only one warm up lap prior to 3 accumulative hot laps.

As far as driver skill is concerned there were a couple hired race car drivers driving the Hennessey viper and the Ultima-GTR, and Active Autoworke also hired someone from the Alegra Lemans team to drive their m3, Leh Keen was hired to drive a Cayman GTR. Amanda Hennessy US CART driver and Robert Dubler from Switzerland was also hired for the chevy HHR's, and Honda race team raced their factory Race Odyssey (450whp / 3200lbs), and BMW factory performance driving School entered two M3's obviously professional drivers, and the owner of Road America also competed in the event. Also Danny Popp IMSA who ran 24 hours of sebring multiple times raced a mongoose car. Glen Dodd who is 66 years old raced professionally in the 70's. Tony Swan editor of car and Driver was in the Factory Nissan GT-R.

So as far driver skill I'm not sure what you are comparing to.

Our bimmer considering being stock we got 5th in our class and 59th overall, we were limited to 90mph due to some track policies concerning roll bars in the vert. Our sponsor sent us a vert instead of a coupe by mistake 5 days before the event we than had a roll bar ordered for a coupe which we could not make fit the vert. that was a major handicap on our part but we somehow still managed consistent times.

The only track we were able to run full speed was beaverun which I ran a very competitive time. here is the link. i ran 46th and no the civc si .5 seconds faster was not stock, its turbocharged 240whp and pulled a .91g skidpad

looking at the skid pad will tell you how tuned these cars were today

and 1/4 mile results can justify how fast on a slippery untreated track to stir things up a little,they let the track sit from the drag night before on purpose to make it more unpredictable. score was best of 2 runs.

I'm not sure if you know how the tracks work but their is only one warm up lap than 3 hot laps starting at the grid. Points are awarded by fastest accumulative 3 hot laps.

Most drivers have never been on 7 out of 10 tracks. most of the time our first lap is still not full speed on turn one. our second lap is still finding the lines, and our third run is the only one than is mentionable, you may be comparing our lap times to what is considered fast by regulars of the track, find out how fast they were their 3rd ever time around the track and then let me know how much skill it requires to handle competitively 400hp track cars at full race level on your third ever lap around a track.

I would highly recommend entering the one lap, Its is an experience of a life time

Was there an NSX (turbo) in the field?

It was mentioned in the Car and Driver article and also on the One Lap Website.

It finished way at the back - I'm assuming there was some sort of mechanical failure?

HAHA!! Congrats! I am a One Lap veteran myself (2003) and can honestly say it was one of the best experiences of my life. The competition gets more and more serious every year, but it is an absolute blast that every real car guy should experience at least once in their life.

Was the Nissan GT-R a factory car or a right hand drive import? How did one get in the race?

I see lots of familiar cars from when I ran it. I cannot imagine how many miles are on some of those cars from running this year after year. I missed this year only because my co-pilot decided not to go and I could not find another one fast enough.

That GTR was a factory car entered by car & driver for review by Tony Swan the editor of the magazine.

Next year if you need a co driver let me know. I will be racing every year that I can.
