I like it precisely because it evokes the why-would-anyone-do-that reaction.

I have my bicycle's rear brake on the front side of the bridge for much the same reason. I like the idea of people saying that it's on the wrong way. Maybe they'll even reflect on why they think the usual way is the right way.
