2 Trunk Improvement Questions

As most of us NSX owners know, the trunk on the NSX is not the most convenient thing in the world to open, relative to most trunks out there. In thinking about what is wrong, two different significant improvements occurred to me, and I was wondering if anyone had any experience on input about them.

First, I was wondering if anyone has looked into higher pressure struts which would open the trunk as soon as you turned the key or pressed the interior button, on the air pressure, so you wouldn't have to put whatever is in your hands down and pull the trunk up from the outsides of the spoiler. It seems like a compelling idea, especially since many other trunks are that way. I thought the problem might be the location of the struts close to the hinge, thereby making them relatively short. But we also have a BMW 325, and the BMW hood has air pressure struts about the same size and location as the NSX trunk. Yet I noticed today that once you release the hood's second catch, the hood opens by itself. You don't have to pull it upwards. So it seems like more powerful struts might work fine. Any experiences or ideas?

Second, I have the keyless entry system, and would love a button to open the trunk on it. This is especially true when I have the remote inside the car disabled due to having the targa top off, so have to use the key to open it. The transmitter already has two buttons, and one is close to useless -- the panic button has been several times an embarrasing wrong button pressed, but never useful. I would love to change it to open the trunk instead. Short of totally replacing the remote system, has anyone seen a change like this done so the second button opens the trunk instead?

If both of these changes were possible, it would be particularly nice. Press a button on the remote and the trunk pops open waiting for you to drop something in. Ahhh.

Chip,

It is interesting you mention the "trunk" button. My 1998 Accord has three buttons plus the panic button:

1. Lock
2. Unlock
3. Trunk Open

Unlock opens the drivers door, if you press it twice all other doors open.

Trunk opens the trunk, but it also does not give you the "rise" you describe in the bimmer.

I agree with you completely!

Please let us know if you do this and keep good notes as there are probably others who will follow your lead on either of these.
