1998 NSX-T -- How's the ride???

I have found a Black/Black '98 Six-speed with ~9000 miles. I have never driven an NSX but will have the opportunity this weekend (at a dealer). The '98 is about 350 miles away and my wife and I will see it next Tues.

In all the research that I have done I cannot find much on ride comfort of the NSX-T. Several of the car magazines list its ride as a minus.

How does the '98 T ride? Can you compare it to a standard suspension of the Corvette C5? Also, how is the noise level at cruise?

A loud or irritating noise along with a rough ride is not what I want, so any comments or other suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks...Rick

Rick,

I have driven both and prefer the ride of the NSX. The NSX has a more 'supple' feel to it. It is still a very 'firm' ride - remember, this is a high-end exotic sports car, not a Cadillac. That being said, I have had drives of up to 4 hours in length and been extremely comfortable. The seats fit like a glove and at 'cruise' ( 90+) the ride is very smooth. There is a little wind noise at high speeds but nothing major IMO.

One of the surprising things about the NSX-T is that it is actually very quiet from inside. With the top off, the wind noise will obviously drown out the stereo system (especially at speeds over 80mph)...the loudness of the NSX's engine is mild by comparison. Yes, you get treated to a sweet sound when revving close to the red line, but, even then, it isn't all that loud. A passing Ferrari 355 or 360 will easily drown out the sound of the NSX's engine at any speed. Loudness at cruising speed is a non-issue. I'd bet that the Corvette is a bit louder.

And the ride is definitely comfortable. You feel the road as you should in any sportscar, but not so much that you end up sore at the end of a long drive.

The seats feel like they were designed around my build (5'9"), but I've heard that people over 6' can feel a bit cramped without modification to their seat. How tall are you?

akira3D,

Thanks for the info. I'm 5'10, about 180 lbs. (That comes from a disease called TMB -- "too many birthdays")

I will drive this car on Tuesday with my wife and I hope to buy it. I was going to buy a new C5 convertible, but have heard horror stories about engine problems (oil consumption, knocking, ring problems and a terrible throttle body whistle). I have heard all kinds of good things about the NSX, hope it's all true.

Regards...Rick

Finest car you will ever own! Besides, you can trust that if it was obnoxious to drive after a few hours honda would not have made it in the first place.

Rick,
I have a '98 NSX-T blk/blk and a close friend has a C5. The NSX far exceeds the C5 in so many ways, but to direct my comments to your question of ride and noise--dB tests conducted result in the NSX being much quieter at idle and at 75 mph cruise. I do find the OEM Yoko tires noisier than SO2 Pole Positions or Dunlop 9000s. If you are like most of us you will only hear the heavenly sounds of the high-reving engine! The ride I would describe as firm and taunt, yet supple, the seat providing a good deal of comfortable support and restraint. Good Luck, you won't be sorry.

Rick,
Mine is a '99 with 9600 mi. The ride is a little rough when the tires are worn out. With new tires the ride is firm and supple at the same time. With 9K that '98 should have a fresh set of tires. Plan to spend about $800 to $1000 in tires every 8 to 10K miles.

Thanks 1HOT NSX,

This car has new tires, less than 200 miles. I wrote in another post about clutch chatter: http://www.nsxprime.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001526.html

Does you car's clutch chatter from a dead stop? Sounds like a common issue on "some" NSXs.
