I am in the market for a NSX and wonder if the changes made in 1997 to increase HP make these cars more desirable and a better car for the money than pre 1997 cars. Thanks

I prefer the early cars (pre '93)... no passenger air bag, softer seats, lighter, simpler: no fly by wire, etc. Coupes are stiffer too.
You really should try to drive both and decide for yourself. Each version has good attributes and bad ones. The ultimate NSX for me is the 97+ hardtop coupe. They are exceedingly rare though.

All depends your budget goals ... 6speed + extra HP is nice, but also more $, if you plan modding it a lot, maybe an early NSX is more ideal due the cash left for FUN! 
Excellent idea. It's much more than 3.0 vs. 3.2 and five speed versus six speed. There were a number of changes through the years. I've owned both a pre 1997 and post 1997.
