OK, here we ago again. I wouldn't want you guys to think I am some kind of a freak, or waste your time, but I am seriously thinking about that one: For one, as far as the pics show, (more pics http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.j...engine=&fuel=&doors=&style_flag=1&cardist=322 ), it looks pretty clean, and for what's its worth, the carfax report didn't show anything bad. Also, it pretty much matches my requirements: bone stock, with apparently maintenance up to date (although I would prefer it to have the '94 wheels). The only drawback is that the car is in Arizona; but I'd be willing to take a trip over there. I called the dealer, and he said that nobody went to loook at it yet, and that he'd be willing to negotiate the price. However, before I commit to it - make trip arrangements, do a PPI...etc.-, I would like to know if anyone knows anything about that car, or the dealer that I should be aware of, or planning on looking at it? I would greatly appreciate your insights.
BTW: the car has 100K and some change, according to the most recent carfax report.

I saw that one online as well, does the dealer have all the paper work for the service? That would be my only concern and if you could get it for a the 25-26 range would make it even better. Very nice car , Good Luck

Looks clean you can always bring the car to Jon Martin at Cerritos Acura for PPI should you decide you want to check it out again after bringing it over.

Hi Froggie,

I believe that's been on Autotrader for about a month now. Looks clean, but my preference is buying from a private party, I just love the fact that you don't pay sales tax when you buy from a private party. I'd rather apply that amount to the car...=)

Seems like to much money for a car that has >100K miles. 25 to 26 should get you into it. If not, keep looking..........

Even though I have noticed a trend of older NSX's going slightly up in price, this seems excessive. You could probably get a similar NSX for the same price but with much less miles.

I CA, you still pay sales tax for any used car purchased. You just pay it to the DMV when registering the vehicle instead of a delaership.

That would have been my next question: Buying that car over there, and registering it here, in CA; in which state do I need to pay the tax?
As far as the price, I already had the intention to offer around 26, 27K max.

Hi froggie, you would pay the tax in your state like SoCalDude said at the DMV.

You pay the sales tax at the CA DMV when you take the car in for registration. And, the DMV does not take credit cards. Ask me how I know.

Hi SoCalDude,

When was the last time you had to pay sales tax in So Cal? Reason I ask, this tax exception started January 2006. I called the DMV here in Las Vegas to clarify and they said it was a nationwide exception. If you paid sales tax on a private party sale in 2006, then the person I spoke to at the DMV is on crack. But I'm pretty sure she was right. If I'm wrong, thank goodness I live in Las Vegas...=)

June 2004 so it may have changed since then. My NSX came from Mass. I had to get a smog certificate, and then register the car at the DMV. Since I was planning on chargethe sales tax to my credit card, I had to run home to get a check. It would be great for us CA's if this has changed and we no longer have to pay sales tax from private parties. It would be worth traveling a bit just to save the 8.25% in LA.

CA DMV

I think the section on Use Tax also applies to sales tax.

Use Tax

Use tax rates vary by county and are generally assessed at the same rate as sales tax in the registered owner's county of residence. When a vehicle is brought to California within 12 months from the date of purchase, use tax may be due. An applicant who purchases a vehicle out-of-state may receive a credit toward the California use tax due for any sales or use tax paid to another state prior to entering California. The tax credit shall not exceed the California tax that is due. For additional use tax information, contact the Board of Equalization online, or by phone at 800-400-7115.

If any one finds out for sure, let us all know!

True, it's use tax, not sales tax. It is collected by the DMV on behalf of the board of equalization. Each state has their own laws. I paid my 8.25% use tax on a car bought in March.

Hi SoCalDude,

Yeah, I'm pretty confident you no longer have to pay sales tax on a private party purchase. I personally did not pay sales tax when I bought a car from a private seller in Phoenix, and when I registered the car in Las Vegas, I just paid the registration fees. The guy next to me however got screwed. He apparently bought a car from Ebay & the seller claimed to be a private seller, when he was in fact a broker. So he had to pay sales tax.

If someone is considering purchasing from a dealer, I would probably call your local DMV for confirmation. On a $30K vehicle, you can save at least a couple thousand, depending what your local sales tax. Not sure if that's a lot of money for you guys, but it sure is for me...=)
