1-2-5 shift?

I was reading information about the Honda Insight from a website devoted to it, and it described how the 1-2-5 shift was a common shifting pattern for Insight owners due to the tall second gear on the Insight.

It got me thinking about trying it out on the X for freeway merges... I wasn't able to pull it off smoothly, but still I wonder if there are folks that drive the X like this regularly as well...

I can't say I do it often, as I usually like to row through the gears or go 3-5 if I do short-shift. You just need to match the revs. The transmission doesn't know or care what gear you came from.

I do the 1-2-5 sequence on occasion. If I am not racing anyone onto the freeway, then it just makes sense to me to go right to 5th once up to speed.

I do 3-6 quite often. There's a highway ramp (merging onto the highway) near my house that is a bit difficult because the extra "merge-on" lane ends rather quickly. So I usually get into 3rd gear around 30mph and then speed up until I'm doing 70, and then just pop it into 6th.

Doesn't it overwork the synchros?

Just guessing....

I don't think so. If you match revs when you shift, the synchros don't know you are coming from second instead of fourth. The overworking happens if you don't match revs, in which case the synchros would have a much larger rpm drop to account for.

You may want to do a search, as this has been discussed before.

1-2-4-6, 1-3-6, etc. To accellerate hard then level off at the speed limit, I use the short shift technique quite often.

I do 1,2,5 a LOT. If I try to do it quickly though, it will grind as I try to get into 5th. Of course, I'm usually not in a hurry if I'm going from 2 to 5, so it's not that big of a problem. :)

skip shift

I do 1-3-5, or 1-4 on occasion, depending on my speed, need and/or conditions:cool:

i do 1-2-5 or sometimes 1-2-3-5. if im going fast enough where the revs won't be too low if i shift to higher then i go ahead and do it.

If I rev out second gear hard and then try to back off and go straight to 5th, it always grinds on me badly. That's in a 91 with 90k miles. I've had a couple people comment that my shift effort seems rather high. My synchros are probably not in the best of health.
