Anyone take out their engine compartment cooling fan?

Hi all,

I just wanted to know if anyone has taken out their engine cooling fan that rarely comes on. You know, the one behind the passenger side vent.

I was considering taking mine out since I understand that it's been ommitted on more current models and that I've never heard it go on ( I guess I don't drive hard enough) so I consider it dead weight. I figure the couple of pounds the electric motor and supporting hardware taken out would only help power to weight ratio. Also, I think that with it taken out, the passenger side vent can allow more cooling air into the engine bay to maintain everything nice and cool.

Now, I don't know if by pulling it out, I'll turn some warning light on or set the electronics out of wack. That's why I'd like to know if I'm going down an already laid path or a dead end. Thoughts anyone?

Chuck it.

Peter, go ahead and take it out. There will be no light warning you to reinstall the 2 lbs. 6.1 oz. of dead weight. :)

I believe the fan was removed on 1995+ NSXs, anyway.

O, have you removed yours?

Mine was on after some freeway driving from Irvine to San Gabriel (45 miles) on a cool SCAL day.

My temp. guage was a bit below the mid point. So it does work.

You are the only person I've ever heard of that actually had it come on.

Ok, Thanks Ojas,

After some wrenching, I finally got the fan assembly out!

I weight all the parts (fan, frame, bolts, brackets) that I took out and it equalled 2bls 10ozs!!! Ya baby!

The engine bay is cleaner and that much faster for free!

Now, what else can I take out?! Thanks again!

spare tire, tool kit, passenger seat, engine cover, stereo, speakers, fender liners, hood rods (f & r), center console, wipers and motor, horns etc...

now you should be at least 0.01 second faster from 0 to 60 mph.

my engine cooling fan is always on ?

Check to see if your radiator fan is also continuously running on high speed. If it is, then you may have a problem with the cooling fan control unit. The same output from the cooling fan control unit operates both the rad fan high speed relay and the engine compartment fan relay. If the rad fan is not operating on high speed when the engine compartment fan is running, then the engine compartment fan relay may be stuck closed. The engine compartment fan relay is mounted just back from the fan opening in the engine compartment. You can remove it and test as described in the service manual.

..........I dated my throttle body for awhile....
