Yokohama releases AD08 R

4th Quarter 2013 needs to get here ASAP!!!

Chatted with someone at Tire Rack.
-AD08s are being discontinued.
-They have a limited range of sizes for the AD08 R in stock right now.
-4th Quarter will be sometime in October.
-Pricing seems to be right on par with the original AD08.

Called Yokohama Tire today. They have all sizes in stock at their warehouses. The lady said any dealer should be able to order any of the sizes listed on Yokohama's website.

Called Tire Rack today and was able to order a set of 205/50R15 and 225/50R16. The guy said they had a shipment scheduled for delivery to their Indiana warehouse today, lol.

Finally!!!

So, if anyone is in need of AD08 Rs right away, give Tire Rack a call (their website is not up-to-date).
I came so close to ordering some S.drives today. Whew.

Regarding tread width, they're pretty much in line with all of the other Extreme Performance Summer tires on Tire Rack.

I just did a quick comparison on their website between the g-Force Rival, Potenza RE-11A, and Direzza ZII.
The Direzza ZII is smaller front and rear.
The Potenza RE-11A is dead even.
The g-Force Rival is a smidge wider on the front but even on the rear.
This was for the standard 205/50R15 and 225/50R16.

Also, Tire Rack has updated their website in regards to the available sizes for the AD08 Rs (I think all sizes available now).

These tires are amazing!

Night and day difference and the steering feels so much better now (granted I was running on a really worn down and 2-year-old set of AD08s).

My first turn in the car with the wheels on and I could just "feel" the tires.

Got them mounted and the wheels back on the car and then drove straight to Atlanta.
Very stable and smooth on the highway, road noise to me was neglegible with the radio on.
Even hit some pretty nasty storms and just pressed on doing 80+. Not the slightest bit disturbed by the rain or water on the road.
Confidence inspiring.

These tires are awesome!!! they remind me of the original yokohama tires when the nsx first got introduced.

I got them wrapped around with the Enkei PF01. Did a local backroad drive with couple buddies ( ZO6 and BOSS 302) and we are all agreeing these tires rock!!!

Man, I'm jealous, mine came wrapped 2 by 2 and without any cardboard or foam protection.... lol
As noted above, those tires were purchased with wheels, so they mount and balance them before shipping. They do that cardboard and foam to protect the faces of the wheels. For unmounted tires, it's not needed.

Ah, good catch.

Re-reading his statement makes sense now. I took it as he got the tires and had them mounted to some Enkei wheels he already owned.

I have a set of the AD08R in 215/40 R17 & 265/35 R18.

I just did a track day at Buttonwillow with them and they are amazing. I was really impressed with the level of grip. Even in 95* ambient temperature, they never got greasy. They provided great feedback.

Granted, I was previously on a set of Toyo T1-R so they are not comparable, but the T1-R would get greasy after 3-4 laps in 75* temp. They run slightly wider than the T1-R at the same sizes, but I did not get any rubbing on the fender or inside. I have 2.25* front camber. I felt the side walls are stiffer than the T1-R also.

Sorry, I have not tried any other Extreme Summer tire so I do not have a good comparison base.

I am very happy with the AD08R and highly recommend them!

I would love a side by side comparison of these AD08r vs the Dunlop Z11's that i have on mine.
not just the tyre rack review but on an NSX

I doubt that anyone can do a side-by-side comparison with two NSX's, on the same track, with the same driver, same tread depth, at the same time, etc.

I also doubt that the results would be significantly different from the side-by-side comparison that the Tire Rack ran with the 328i sedan. Basically both tires were excellent, with the Dunlop ever so slightly better than the Yokohama in most characteristics measured on a dry track, and the Yokohama ever so slightly better than the Dunlop in most characteristics measured on a wet track. You can read the full report here.

Should I get the 205 or the 225 size for my OEM 16/17 wheels?

For 16" the AD08R comes in 205/55R16 and 225/50R16 - 50 series is closer to OEM than 55 so I guess the 225 is preferable?

I'm pretty sure you don't want 225/50R tires in front. They are going to be too large in diameter for the TCS unless you also oversize the rears (compared to a 255/40R17 rear, the 255/50R-16 front is 0.7% smaller, not the ~6% your car is looking for).

If you oversize the rear accordingly, I suspect you will have issues with rubbing somewhere (but don't know for sure).

For 16/17 stagger, I am only aware of the following tires in the highest performance class:
Bridgestone RE010
Toyo Proxes R1R
Kumho Ecsta XS
Falken Azenis RT-615K

See the spreadsheet I put together; open to corrections.

I found this page useful to calculate tire size differences.

Yes, get one of those other tires instead. Don't get 225/50-16 in front; not only will it cause problems for the TCS, but it will also rub big-time.

Yokohama makes the correct 215/45R16 size for the stock front wheels but apparently they do not export them to the US. Not sure if that is going to change anytime soon and I am not sure how to find out. I did go online and found Fuji Online Shopping can ship them from Japan for...wait for it.... $1,246 for a set of 2! Over $700 of that is shipping. These tires almost sound good enough to justify that expense. Especially for those of us who want to keep the stock wheels. Does anybody have experience with purchasing tires internationally?

Is there someplace closer that they do export that size to? Canada? Mexico?

I would call Yokohama directly and inquire with them (that's what I did to find out availability of the tires in the first place).
Depending on what they say, I would then call TireRack and see if they could special order them for you from Yokohama.

But yes, they do make a 215/45R16 and many other sizes besides the ones listed on tirerack.com/yokohamatire.com.

tire rack only stocks tires they feel they can sell enough of.......the 215/45/16 is a somewhat unique size.but if you ask nicely maybe they will help you oem guys.

Yokohama does not show the new AD08R on their Canadian website. Not just that size - they don't show it at all.

But remember, the R1R, XS, and RT-615K are all available in 16"/17" sizes. So there are other, similar tires to choose from. None of which cost $1246 for two.
