I have a gurney flap coming, I have a question

Guys I have a gurney flap coming from Japan, they tell me it is attached to the R wing via 3M double stick tape or some sort of adhesive.

What I want to know is.... When we speak of pounds of downforce, is that on the actual splitters, and spoilers? Is that weight distributed on the body? How much weight and stress is actually on something like a gurney flap? Is it OK to be using 3M tape on a flap that may see 140 MPH on the track?
 
3M tape is no joke clean the surface of any wax and stick it down, it wont come off.

The Gurny flap increases the effectivness of the wing itself but wont take much load itself (obviously depends on size). Typically they are only 1-2% of the wing cord which on a type R wing would be under 1/4 of an inch, yours is probably a bit bigger for aesthetics, but still with 3M youll be fine with anything under a couple inches. That stuffs no joke

Yes, my goal is to get it first, check its fit, make sure it's a good product before it qualifies for a turbo2go GB. LOL.

So sounds like I should be OK with the 3M tape.
 
Post pictures when it arrives. The NSX-R wing already has a pretty pronounced lip on the trailing edge of the wing. I'm interested to see what it looks like.

I've always toyed with the idea of putting a few nut-serts on the trailing edge of the NSX-R wing and have a vertical panel with slots for the bolts to be able to adjust the height of a gurney flap on the NSX-R wing.

FWIW, the NSX-R wing does make a noticeable amount of rear downforce, despite the trailing edge of the wing not (seeming) to be efficient like the trailing edge of most wings.

I installed a Gurney flap on my GTC300 wing last January and have 2 track days on it with no issues what so ever. It is attached with 1" 3M two sided tape. You'll need to get your reading glasses out to see it as it's C/F just like the rest of the wing. Tested @ 150mph+ on a closed course. If you need better pics, just let me know what angles you're looking for and I'll try to accommodate you.

Guys it is the Tommy Kaira gurney flap. I already have a full kit coming with an LED delete on the splitter, and I am negotiating pricing for a group buy. The word on the street is their quality is absolutely top notch. They do a lot of GTR stuff, they are not a small company. Here are a couple of videos:

Dave that is not a Gurney flap. A Gurney flap acts 90 perpendicular to the chord of the wing. That is more like a NASCAR type spoiler. This type of spoiler is big downforce and big drag. A gurney flap actually improves the efficiency of the existing airfoil with minimum increase in drag.

Really? I have seen so many spoliers called gurney flaps none of which were 90 degrees. a little 90 degree lip is almost on the factory R wing already... I was told this definitely increases downforce. OK so you lose 3MPH top speed. LOL. So just call this a spoiler? Tommy Kaira calls it a gurney flap.
 
The "Tommy" essentially acts like a fowler flap on an airplane wing. They are extending the wing increasing the planform area of the wing and changing the chord. This will increase both the parasitic and induce drag. So it will make downforce but also a considerable amount of drag too.

Think of the planform as the area of the wing and chord is the length of the wing.

I'm sure riding on airplanes you have noticed when the flaps come out, the first notch of flaps slide out towards the back of the plane. Second notch go further back and down. Third more down and fourth even more down. They are changing the chord and the camber line of the wing. The first notch is more lift than drag and the rest add drag. That's why they takeoff with only the first notch out and land with it all out. Why? The first notch creates more lift than drag. The others just add drag because jet engines take a long time to spool up, we need a lot of drag hanging out there so we can keep the power up on the approach so if we need to go around the engines are already at 70%. Go around. "Set thrust, flaps 20". Boom the engines are already spooled up and we dump the flaps back to the first notch and away we go. :)

Yes, I know exactly where to find them at my local Lowe's store too; right next to those threaded rods indeed!! And trust me I have thought about inserting a similar product at the edge between the wing and the 3rd light :eek::biggrin:

I agree the TK piece is not a gurney flap but rather changes the chord, camber, and profile of the wing. It has a decent profile and I would imagine the part would make a good amount of additional downforce. I don't think it will get you anywhere near the efficiency or downforce of a proper airfoil/wing element, but it would help close the gap a little -at the cost of making your rearward vision completely useless.

If you could make it removable with cam-locks or some sort of fastener, it would be awesome.
 
Billy I actually fabbed up a cardboard "replica" on my car it check view... While it does block some more for sure, it doesn't make it useless. You can still see below the wing, and slightly above and more to the sides as the lip tapers. So yeah... It's not great but it's not as bad as one might expect.

I just can't see myself with a Big Ass Wing. First of all, I need to be a lot better driver before I will sport something like that. So the majority reason of this flap for me is I like its look and how it ties in the R wing which I've never really loved. If I get some additional downforce, great. I need all the downforce I can get with the way I drive. LOL
