Just over 4 years ago I was very fortunate to come out ahead of a bad situation. For those of you that don’t know you can check it out here http://www.nsxprime.com/forum/showthread.php?t=88492 & http://www.nsxprime.com/forum/showthread.php?t=88554.

After all the hoopla with the insurance company I was able to buy back my ’91 with the intentions of maybe rebuilding it in the future. Brought it home and parked it in my garage and threw a cover over it for the last 4 years. A few months later I replaced it with a super clean ’00 Black NSX-T. I still contemplated with the idea of rebuilding my ’91 started looking into it and just didn’t make financial sense to repair the damaged frame.

Last year I stumbled across an empty chassis salvage repaired and possibly needing some front end repair from Cali. Chatted with the owner on numerous occasions and then made the arrangements and had her shipped to me in Oct ’11. When importing I was told by CBSA/Transport Canada that since the car was a salvage repair the car need to be on the road in 12 months or less i.e. Structural inspection, Certified (MTO Safety), and Emissions Tested. So lucky for me a ’91 is +15yrs old exempting it from RIV program in Canada, but not exempted from Transport Canada’s Motor Vehicle Regulations Act have to have her done by Oct '12.

Oh wow was not expecting that... so with that said started tearing in into the build Winter ’11 let the madness begin to get her on the road in less than 12months & enough babbling... Pictures because no one likes to read anymore we are fast forwarding through a few months of work so missed some steps here and there but you get the idea:

My '91 Black... The way I would like to always remember her before the accident:

Hey Shawn thanks man lots of work ahead in the coming weeks, yes I felt that way before my car was sacrificed to help resurrect and bring another back to life.

Awesome thread, can't wait to see the car finished! Best of luck!

Thanks haven't had the chance to post anything till now, been too busy working on the project. But there will be more pics & info coming as I go keep tuned.

I'm curious, what is that liquid coming down from one of the cam wheels???

Common problem in almost every NSX engine its melted sealant from the CRK/CYL behind TB Covers. I removed most of it already lucky for me it dripped clear of anything important nothing to really worry about if you find it inside your engine just make sure its not getting on the timing belt or tensioner.

See:

You know your Black 1991 NSX is one of my favorite NSX ans inspired me to get one!

good luck with the project!

Thats awesome man! Thanks maybe I will inspire with the new build once again

I've got some more progress for weeks prior:

Scrubbing dirty front suspension with Simple Green, a parts cleaning brush, and power washed they came out pretty good after cleaning:

You should repaint the car a different color while it's all torn down! Perfect time to do so

Yes I've already got plans are to repaint the entire chassis on the outside, and then the entire car body pannels.

Here are some more progress pics:

Forwarding throught the removal of the coils, valve covers, etc to get to the old LMA spring/lifter removal to install SOS's new springs and shims:

Getting ready to remove holders, cams, and rockers to access the LMA replacing cam seals & plugs while its all out. Amazingly the motor is pretty clean inside:

Factory black coating still on the cams pretty amazing to see its still there after 20+ years:
2058b89e8f4e92b4e814315176c219493f954bde4409eec5ca3fd21157cc14bf6g.jpg

Some gunky looking oil in the bore, nice and clean now:
27b4b16db20ae719de3180800dff25de1883da40ac7a00e95e3aab8d486c52d86g.jpg

New SOS LMA spring and shim lubed & installed, as far as I know '00+ NSX's are all new spring design. No more clicking after this, valves will be adjusted after reassembly:
6c3138f1ad8f18552ef0b20ad2b945bba19759daddde3ad485bc2e6d1b1d7dec6g.jpg

Install of SOS Oil Pressure upgrade, my original was acting up sometimes reading nothing and sometimes working. Figure lets get it done and over with now, so much easier working on the motor on the ground:

Removing the old tb belt, unfortunately when my car was involved in the accident years ago firefighters smashed all glass out, and some wound up in my timing belt cover contaminated it:

Inspection of the intake butterflies using an inspection scope. Double checking the swidging of the screws, both sides look great. Took a while to check each one but well worth it, if one of these comes loose and falls in I can only imagine what would happen. Inspection of this should be part of the tb service for every motor especially the older cars:

Amazing thread and amazing patience. You will have 1st hand experience on these cars in the end. Experience most of us never will with the exception of Shawn:wink:. Do you plan on getting all the suspension parts looking new? Save your recipts, I'd like to see the end cost of this. You are a patient, patient man.

Very Nice Richie...keep the pixs coming.

Bram

I'm acutally behind on posting pics and ahead on the work... or at least I hope so gotta meet the Oct deadline. More pics to come shortly.

Thanks David, I've got 12month deadline and counting down to Oct. So hopefully I will have the car re-assembled chassis will be painted, but maybe not the body to save time or at least get it to the point of meeting the inspection requirements.

I'm behind on pics but slowly posting more as time allows, suspension I just cleaned up with Simple green they came out nice. Been doing full maintenance/refresh on everything I can get my hands with the time I have. Getting to know every nook & cranny of the NSX pretty much a full frame restoration which teaches you so much especially how detailed the assembly process from factory was. As for cost I've been tracking it.... I'll tell you it more of a labour of love than the cost of building it.

Best of luck on your project! Glad to see one more NSX getting restored.
I just read all the threads on your accident from 2007 and noticed you mentioned the injuries were minor but mentioned some possible nerve damage in your neck. Were you able to fully recover from that? I know sometimes that can linger indefinitely.
I hope you are well and keep updating us on the progress.

Thanks so far she is coming along nicely. Yes I was hurt in the accident, spent over a year in chiro/rehab/physio I do have some lingering damage that I will have to live. I always have shoulder/back pain now some days better than others. Trying to stay active and working out helps out a lot, but some days are better than others.

Roller disassembly inspection and reassembly, 10pins per roller x 12 rollers = 120pins. I didn't take all of them apart after inspection seeing almost no wear I cleaned to the point where new grease can jammed in:

Great news from my body shop. Had the frame looked over repaired and back to factory specs. First coats of paint going on. I was only allowed in there for a quick couple pics and told to get out so I didn't contaminate the booth. Can anyone guess what the colour is hint is it is a true NSX colour and no its not berlina black?

First few layers of paint:

Dark Charcoal, paint code NH-629M?

Looks awesome. How did you get the GT Spec bars in that dark gray? I thought they only came in whatever color they were using at the time (orange, blue, etc)?

Thanks man its turning out great so far, and nope its not NH-629M.

The bars are nasty pearl/goldish blue just like GT-Spec advertised, I think they look semi gray from the flash in semi darkness. I wanted to re-paint or powdercoat them another colour but pressed for time I will install as is for now.

That gray is beautiful

Thanks a bit darker than I expected but it, I really like how its turning out so far.

kaiser silver?

Good guess but nope its not NH-546M - Kaiser Silver.

Oooo, you're right. Just checked out their web site and man, that color does look pretty nasty in some of the photos. Why can't they just make their bars a nice neutral color like black?
