I saw this last night while buying oil/filter for the GTO.

$28 for a 5 QT jug.

Apparently this is Pennzoil's latest and best oil.

I wonder if that could potentially move them up in the wear test ranking.

I guess their marketing campaign/contract with Castrol expired, or perhaps different parts of Ferrari are recommending different brands. Either way, change it regularly with any name brand full synthetic and you won't need to worry about the fractions of a millimeter on the graph (which may be within the range of error).

That really isn't all that expensive for synthetic oil.
The engine oil for a Ford GT is $8.91 qt.:eek:
The trans fluid is $35.50 per qt. :eek:

I've been using Castrol for all my cars. Not sure if Pennzoil is really worth to switch.

I would not extend the intervals between oil changes beyond what's recommended by the car manufacturer, no matter what the oil manufacturer says.

Several oil companies have come out with super-premium versions of their full synthetic oil, including not only Pennzoil, but also Castrol (their super-premium is Edge with Titanium, vs their standard full synthetic is Edge with Syntec). Maybe they feel they can make more money that way, or maybe they don't want to lose sales to the super-expensive super-premiums like Amsoil, Royal Purple, etc. Is it worth the extra money? That's up to you. Me, I agree with Liquid's post above.

There is nothing better than Amsoil + Auto-Rx. I used this cocktail exclusively in Charlotte. When the motor was pulled at 265,000 miles for the TT build the internals still looked almost new. The engine still met factory compression specs as well. But don't listen to me. I have almost no driving experience in an NSX. :)

Alain,
I am ready for my 2nd oil change using Ultra but it simply "disappeared" from the shelf of all the typical auto stores we frequent and non of them know why. So I had to use Platinum. I'd contact Pennzoil and the closest dealer source I got was:

http://oil-store.com/

looking at the data sheet, its only API SM not SN. I haven't try order it. Shipping a gal. oil must be very costly.

I just may switch to Amsoil as its a great product as well.

Hugh,
I have tried a couple bottles of the Auto-Rx mix, I don't know my internals looks new is due to my regular oil change or due to the Rx or the combo. do you not think if we change oil regularly, the detergent in the oil can keep the internals clean and looking new(depending on the detergent in various brands)?

Liftnot,

Last time I ordered through http://www.amazon.com/Pennzoil-550023013-6PK-Ultra-European-Synthetic/dp/B006A49J02

and the price was about the same with their super saver free shipping promotion as Walmart with tax.

I spoke to Pennzoil and they said that demand (I guess from the news traveling fast that Ultra is just that good) has skyrocketed and they can't make the stuff fast enough since the refinery and overall manufacturing process takes more steps.

Last year I stocked up not thinking that the shortage would be like this.

I'm regretting it now.

6. 5W30 Mobil 1, API SN synthetic = 105,875 psi
zinc = 801 ppm
phosphorus = 842 ppm
moly = 112 ppm
calcium = 799 ppm
TBN = 7.5

8. 0W30 Amsoil Signature Series 25,000 miles, API SN synthetic = 105,008 psi
zinc = 824 ppm
phosphorus = 960 ppm
moly = 161 ppm
calcium = 3,354 ppm
TBN = 11.4

Apparently, Mobil 1 is pretty good too...

Try Walmart. Either go to your nearest Walmart store, or you can use the "site to store" feature on their website. $26.97 for a five-quart jug. Great deal.

Pennzoil's website now has several offers through the end of next month, including $10 off on the purchase of five quarts of Pennzoil Platinum, 50 cents off per gallon on up to 20 gallons of Shell fuel with the purchase of five quarts of Pennzoil Ultra or Pennzoil Platinum, or $10 off on an oil change with Pennzoil Ultra or Pennzoil Platinum. Click here for details.

^ You use 5w-30? I thought Honda recommended 10w-30?

Well My engine rebuild is made with modern machines, and machining techniques and tolerances.

Same for the new components that I've used.

My engine builder explained to me that back in the day the tolerances where 1/100 of an inch.

It's now more like 1/1000 of an inch. Hence why most cars don't seem to need a "break in period" and run with Synthetics right outta the showroom floor.

Even the new method for breaking in an engine is different where the old way was to drive it easy for 3k~ miles.

Now it's more like warm it up and then hammer the car up to 4k RPMs, engine break down and repeat after letting the engine cool down.

Honda's recommendation for the NSX, in the owner's manual and service manual, is to use only 10W30 at temperatures above 32F, only 5W30 at temperatures below -2F, and either of the two viscosities between those two temperatures. They developed this recommendation at a time when all their other cars had 5W30 as the preferred viscosity recommendation. And I can only imagine that the tolerances in the NSX were highly advanced, at least at the time of its introduction.

I always used 10W30 in my NSX.
