There are at least 3 different OEM console colors and I have matched them. I have gone so far as to get the name on the screen pod, the one that says "Honda Navigation" (for a Zanardi, a different console color) replicated so that the base color could be matched for the particular year.
The challenge was the fine mica and the flop but it can be done. It takes good light and time and of course the ability to see what is there, which is not innate just because someone is a great painter. Some of the very best can't see the subtleties of color and can't seem to choose the right tint to move it as needed.
I was going to keep a actual formula on tap but it's made more sense for me to make up my own formula and match it to the vehicle in question as needed.
Since I've switched to waterborne paint there seems to be more mica selections and there are much finer, less coarse ones which lend themselves to these console colors very well.
For most customers getting very close and painting the adjacent parts is a much easier solution and takes less time and just makes sense.
On the other hand, you have the customer that is obsessed and will lose sleep over a trivial, slight shade on a console and knowing the adjacent panels were painted haunts them. Some will go catatonic just because in the right light they see a imperfection the size of the period at the end of this sentence. For them you have to match and charge for the time as you see fit.
It takes all kinds and there is room for us all but, there is a price for being crazy.
The rest get a rattle can of DupliColor which is not a bad solution or color and are happy as a clam, God bless them.
