Need advice on ABS modulator replacement

After a diagnostic test at dealer, they advised that the abs modulator needs to be replaced - $2600 total cost, $2100 for the modulator. Being a new NSX owner, I'm unfamiliar with pricing/repairs. Does this sound reasonable/common? We found the part wholesale for $1675. Is this a good price? Are there any suggestions/alternatives? Can this repair be done by yourself with a moderate skill level?

What is the problem with the ABS modulator and what else have they tried so far to fix it?

the dealer thinks the modulator is seized maybe due to lack of frequent use or possibly old brake fluid. the technician changed the fluid and worked to unseize the unit for about 2 hours (not too sure what this involved). they also said it was not registering any trouble codes in the self diagnostic system.

I would like to get on the same track as Lud. What is the problem you are having? Do you have an ABS light on? Do you feel the ABS is not working? Is the presuure pump always running? This is a pretty expensive repair, so it would be worth understanding the basic problem so maybe we can offer some alternatives.

I can tell you that my experience with the ABS is when the weather started to get cold, my pressure pump would not shut off. I was advised that since the system is rarely used the seloniods tend to get stuck. The fix was go into a dirt/gravel parking lot and do a few repeated panic stops to excercise the system. Well I did a brake bleed on the system, then went to the packing lot and PROBLEM CURED!! I spent $100 on the ABS bleeder tool and about $4.00 on the brake fluid, well worth it in my opinion.

DPC - I agree with Larry... it is possible that the system does need to be fixed but often this can be done by finding a big empty wet parking lot (or gravel / dirt as Larry used) and running up to 40-50 MPH and stomping the brakes 10, 20, 30 times in a row and bleeding the fluid in the high pressure side of the system. Definitely worth a try before doing the $2000 repair.

Thanxs for your reply...according to the dealer, the ABS is not working. The ABS light is not on. If the pump is audible when running, mine is not running all the time. The dealer bled the system and tried
the panic stop exercise. According to the dealer nothing worked. Any further suggestions?
