Caravan from LA to Monterey

(Actually from Santa Clarita to Seaside)

nsxpo99-may05-0001.jpg (62175 bytes)Gathering at the hotel Wednesday morning.

nsxpo99-may05-0002.jpg (63189 bytes)More cars at the hotel. You can see Doug Hayashi's car in the background. He had clutch problems so he had to turn around and go back to Riverside and have it worked on, which meant that unfortunately he couldn't join the caravan as originally planned.

nsxpo99-may05-0003.jpg (56893 bytes)Everyone standing around checking out the cars.

nsxpo99-may05-0004.jpg (60210 bytes)Lining up along the road getting ready to leave Santa Clarita.

nsxpo99-may05-0009.jpg (55129 bytes)Getting under way.. There were 30-35 NSXs in the caravan, which would make for a pretty big NSX event all by itself. But we're going to be meeting up with over a hundred more in Monterey!!

nsxpo99-may05-0010.jpg (49760 bytes)Blasting down the highway headed for the back roads.

nsxpo99-may05-0011.jpg (53952 bytes)Back roads found! This was very exciting; everyone was looking forward to 8-10 hours of very spirited driving through canyon roads and then up the gorgeous Pacific Coast Highway with nearly 3 dozen NSXs. For those of us who live on the other side of the country this was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

nsxpo99-may05-0012.jpg (49181 bytes)The roads we took for the first leg of the caravan are supposedly similar to the ones that the SoCal group has been using for the Canyonball events..

nsxpo99-may05-0013.jpg (54022 bytes)Blasting up one of many short straight sections of road. It was hard to take pictures of any nice curvy sections of road because I was driving...

nsxpo99-may05-0016.jpg (59600 bytes)Stopping to re-group. It's difficult to keep over 30 cars together for extended periods on public roads.

nsxpo99-may05-0017.jpg (60565 bytes)Line of stopped cars

nsxpo99-may05-0018.jpg (54219 bytes)John Stramotas' (CA) nice red car with white powdercoated wheels. I was following him during this part of the caravan.

nsxpo99-may05-0019.jpg (53129 bytes)Mark Johnson's (CA) new green/tan "Dali II" car that I'm driving. Thanks Mark!

nsxpo99-may05-0020.jpg (56716 bytes)Kin Mitra's (GA) modified black car. You can sort of see his RM hood at this angle.

nsxpo99-may05-0021.jpg (61053 bytes)Row of mirrors and side air intakes.

nsxpo99-may05-0022.jpg (57940 bytes)Cool shadow effect from the Dali Racing sticker on the rear glass.

nsxpo99-may05-0023.jpg (46947 bytes)Back to driving again..

nsxpo99-may05-0024.jpg (59127 bytes)Quick pit stop at McDonalds.

nsxpo99-may05-0026.jpg (55618 bytes)We caused quite a traffic jam in the McDonald's parking lot.

nsxpo99-may05-0027.jpg (52716 bytes)Pulling out of McDonald's was complicated because it was right by a major intersection. We got pretty split up and so regrouped a little way down the road. Red seems to be a pretty popular color...

nsxpo99-may05-0029.jpg (41134 bytes)After today I understand why the Canyonball events are so popular. These roads are EMPTY, well maintained and enormously FUN!

nsxpo99-may05-0030.jpg (56527 bytes)Some NSXs heading down some cool road. Oh yeah, and a UFO in the upper middle part of the picture. OK, maybe it's just some gunk on the windshield, but it could be a UFO...

nsxpo99-may05-0033.jpg (42041 bytes)After the first leg we hit some real rollercoaster roads. I thought the first set of roads were just about the best you could find until we hit the second set. They were simply unbelievable. I was honestly surprised that no passengers got motion sick.

nsxpo99-may05-0034.jpg (50633 bytes)Things finally flattened out a little bit as we headed into the town of Templeton for lunch!

nsxpo99-may05-0035.jpg (63178 bytes)Parking for lunch at the park in the center of the town of Templeton.

nsxpo99-may05-0036.jpg (62030 bytes)Templeton is a very quaint small town... the cars parked all around the perimeter of the park in the town's center caused quite a stir.

nsxpo99-may05-0037.jpg (62424 bytes)From the rear. We were actually on all three sides of the park because not all the cars would fit on one side.

nsxpo99-may05-0038.jpg (63569 bytes)The park in the center block of town was pretty nice. This is a scenic picture of some cars lined up outside the park.

nsxpo99-may05-0039.jpg (64342 bytes)Another picture... zoomed in a bit vs. the one above.

nsxpo99-may05-0040.jpg (62903 bytes)More through-the-trees shots... By the way, the weather was perfect!

nsxpo99-may05-0041.jpg (63775 bytes)I hope these aren't too repetitive; I tried to take several angles so as many people as possible would be able to see their cars!

nsxpo99-may05-0042.jpg (64001 bytes)OK, the last one of these shots.

nsxpo99-may05-0043.jpg (63807 bytes)Lunch was provided by a catering service. It was very good! Here's everyone getting in line for some food.

nsxpo99-may05-0044.jpg (64389 bytes)I'm pretty sure Kendall Pond (CA) and Dave Goward (CA) paid someone off so they could eat first... (Kendall is on the left, Dave on the right)

nsxpo99-may05-0045.jpg (62488 bytes)The rest of the folks eating lunch.

nsxpo99-may05-0048.jpg (62641 bytes)More car pictures! Notice the police car driving past in the background. You can also see Kin Mitra's (GA) RM Racing hood on the far left.

nsxpo99-may05-0050.jpg (58262 bytes)As soon as we got back on the road this vintage Jaguar jumped into the middle of the caravan.... Pretty cool, but he was going a little slower than our target speed.

nsxpo99-may05-0053.jpg (50479 bytes)Once the Jag pulled off it was clear flying.

nsxpo99-may05-0055.jpg (56394 bytes)Out-the-window shot of the cars behind me.  I was near the front of the caravan here so you can really get an idea of how many NSXs there were... they just keep going!

nsxpo99-may05-0057.jpg (47521 bytes)The scenery along route 1 is simply spectacular and never lets up.

nsxpo99-may05-0059.jpg (57895 bytes)The weather stayed nice all day long too. Warm, with a pleasant breeze. Not a cloud in the sky.

nsxpo99-may05-0060.jpg (58227 bytes)We stopped at Cafe Nepenthe to take in the scenery and get some drinks. This place has an absolutely breathtaking 270 degree view!

nsxpo99-may05-0061.jpg (62429 bytes)Attempt at an artsy photo from the balcony at Cafe Nepenthe

nsxpo99-may05-0062.jpg (51610 bytes)Lots of the coast looks much like this.

nsxpo99-may05-0063.jpg (51275 bytes) I strongly recommend driving the PCH. The only down side is that lots of other people like to drive on it too. Try to go during off-season. I think the fact that we were driving during the middle of the week instead of on the weekend helped as well.

nsxpo99-may05-0064.jpg (51960 bytes)Just another gorgeous view as we neared Monterey...

nsxpo99-may05-0066.jpg (58592 bytes)When we arrived at the hotel many others had already made it. Here's a picture of the only two yellow cars (so far..)

nsxpo99-may05-0067.jpg (59728 bytes)More cars in the hotel parking lot. The blue one belongs to Jerry Balcer (HI). He shipped it from Hawaii just for NSXPO!

nsxpo99-may05-0068.jpg (59554 bytes)Yet more cars in the parking lot. We had our own roped-off sections to park in.

nsxpo99-may05-0069.jpg (59253 bytes)Event registration. Left to right: I think that may be Dick Hackman (OH) with his back to the camera on the far left, Gary Milgrom (GA) standing, Harry Sommerfield (CA), Lauren Hackman (OH) looking at box, Jacqueline Berthiaume (CA), Alex Vizcarra (CA) facing the camera. Registration went very smoothly and quickly. Great job guys!

nsxpo99-may05-0070.jpg (55034 bytes)Randy Marchetti (AZ) from RM Racing set his car up in front of the hotel and drew quite a crowd. Nice HID headlights Randy!

Tomorrow... Country Drive, 17 Mile Drive, Welcome Dinner
